Structural Engineering Trends in 2022

With each passing year, the world around us evolves and changes. Structural engineers are one group that is feeling the effects of this transformation.

Structural engineers are extensively involved in how to create the regions we live in and the structures in which we live and work. They are essential to satisfy the fluctuating needs of our ever-changing planet. To accommodate the need, solutions are needed, and these solutions emerge into yearly trends. Looking ahead to 2020, here are a few themes that are likely to emerge.

Technology advancements are coming at an incredible rate. These innovations enable engineers and builders to simplify their operations. By streamlining procedures, this helps teams to minimize overhead and turn over work more quickly and efficiently.

Geo-Engineering

One of the areas most touched by technological advancement is the environment. New methodologies enable structural engineers to take use of energy-saving strategies on new projects. The effects of these reforms will be seen and felt for decades to come.

Modular Construction

Though not necessarily new, modular architecture remains a creative technique to design and build structures more rapidly without jeopardizing their integrity or safety. This method is commonly used in the commercial building sector, where box units are stacked or positioned side by side.

Modular building methods have lately been applied on residential projects such as basement construction for new homes. There are even locations where complete portions of the home are built off-site and placed on the foundation, minimizing time and labor.

Practices for Zero Waste

Although not a new concept, zero waste methods are becoming more common and appear to be more generally implemented. Adopting zero waste methods benefits everyone involved since it eliminates waste when particular items reach the end of their useful life. Parts can be replaced rather than discarded totally by adding technique that takes this into consideration. Using bolts instead of welds is one example. The benefit of this technology is that in future expansion, bolts might be reused rather than complete welded portions needing to be dismantled.

Materials That Are Sustainable

As the quest for sustainability has grown, so has the development of innovative construction approaches. Building safety technology has been devised and applied by structural engineers. One example is devices designed to detect seismic activity in places prone to earthquakes. This technology enables structures to monitor and respond to changes in the earth's surface as they occur. As if that weren't enough, experts have lately developed 3D printing and concrete that can heal itself when damaged!

The term "responsibility" refers to the act of determining whether or not a person is responsible for his or her own actions. These developments, as in the past, will be interesting to see evolve and even more useful to us all. San Francisco Structural Engineers is positioned to take advantage of these improvements when they arise. Contact our engineers immediately to discuss how we can collaborate and capitalize on these emerging trends.
